In my last Biology lesson we started to dissected the pellets of owls. Pellets are the collected remains of that parts of animals that the owl couldn't digest. This pellets usually contain bones of smaller vertebrates like mice, indigested feathers, fur and exoskeletons of insects.
Birds like owls or hawks choke those pellets up to become lighter so that they can fly easier. It also needs less energy for the digestion of the birds. Below you can see what exactly those pellets contain:
This experiment should show us with practical work what the secondary heterotrophic consumers are really eating. Primary heterotrophs like mice for example get hunted by animals like birds of prey.
In my pellet I mainly founnd animal bones from mice which told me that the owl that prodced this pellet was highly likely to live in a forrest or agricultural place.
